Flexible solar panel
installation planning
Use this checklist to prepare a flexible solar installation discussion. Exact installation methods come from the approved module, mounting and roof-system instructions.
Start flexible solar panel installation planning with the roof, the complete installed load and an approved mounting system. Then confirm module layout, electrical compatibility and maintenance access for the exact site.
1. Record the roof and surface conditions
Identify the roof material, age, condition and usable area. Measure surface geometry, roof obstructions, drainage routes and shaded regions. For curved surfaces, provide the radius and direction of the curve rather than a photograph alone.
Ask the relevant building or roof specialist to assess remaining capacity, attachment loads, access requirements and the effect of the proposed installation on the roof warranty. A lightweight module does not remove these requirements.
2. Compare module weight with total installed load
KJI direct-bonding flexible modules are listed at 2.9 kg/m²; framed flexible modules at 3.8 kg/m² including their frames. Include adhesives, clamps, cabling, supports and associated equipment when assessing the complete system load.
Also review local wind uplift, snow loading, thermal movement and fire or building requirements. A module’s mechanical test rating does not certify a particular roof or attachment arrangement.
3. Choose the appropriate mounting approach
Direct-bonding flexible panels
Check that the substrate and roof system support the specific adhesive method. The installation instructions should address surface preparation, compatible materials, permitted application conditions and the attachment layout.
Do not substitute a general construction adhesive or assume that the same bonding pattern applies to every roof. Allow for drainage, inspection and future roof maintenance as required by the approved system.
Framed flexible panels
Review the dedicated clamp type, allowable clamping locations, support layout and fastening requirements. Consider individual module removal, rear ventilation, access paths and any restrictions imposed by the roof or mounting supplier.
4. Confirm the electrical design
Request the full electrical datasheet, including open-circuit voltage, operating voltage and current, short-circuit current, temperature coefficients and maximum permitted system voltage. Compare these values with the inverter or charge controller and the planned string configuration.
A battery system normally needs an appropriate charge controller. Grid-connected systems require suitable equipment and local compliance. Cable routing, connectors, isolation, earthing and protection need a qualified design for the site.
5. Plan handling and maintenance access
Check lifting points, packaging, bending direction and the permitted bending radius. Do not crease or twist a flexible laminate, bend it over sharp edges, pull on cables or assume it is designed for foot traffic. Follow the exact product instructions.
Plan how the installation will be inspected, cleaned and serviced. Keep drainage routes and required access clear. Review what happens when a roof section or individual module needs repair or replacement.
6. Keep the order and installation records
- Selected configuration, final datasheet and labeling requirements
- Approved mounting instructions and substrate compatibility records
- Applicable product reports, certificates and written warranty terms
- Site design, installation records, module identification and inspection results
- Maintenance guidance and the agreed support or claim process
Prepare a useful inquiry
Send location, roof material, dimensions, curve radius if applicable, target power, estimated quantity, equipment requirements and the desired delivery date. KJI Energy can then discuss the flexible module configuration and documentation you need.
